WEEKI WACHEE, Fla — A large hole opened on Tuesday near Marvelwood Road and Mississippi Kite Avenue in Weeki Wachee.
The land was vacant and is private property.
Drone video from Joshua Cash shows the size of the hole from inside.
Southwest Florida Water Management District said that the property owner is responsible for remediation.
We talked with one neighbor who told us she's on high alert.
"Yesterday we were researching to see how we can get our house checked to see and make sure there's no movement going on underneath us because if it's that close, where else is it going to happen?" Julia Nunez explained.
Nunez said she also worries her community is becoming over-populated.
"I'm scared. I'm scared my house is next. Now we're just waiting to see where else it's going to pop up and there's so much land here. They're just going to continue building. All of this is going to be houses at some point and this is just going to make things worse for the people that live here," Nunez added.
“You know, it might just be time we take a look if HOAs are really even necessary.
Maybe we should just do away with homeowner associations as a whole.”
South Florida lawmaker Rep. Juan Carlos Porras (R-Miami) says it may be time to do away with homeowners associations altogether, as more Floridians speak out about rising fees, costly lawsuits, and even arrests tied to HOA disputes. He said this week that he is considering filing legislation in the next session that would abolish HOAs statewide.
