TAMPA, Fla. — The City of Tampa said council members approved a land swap agreement to transfer privately owned land believed to be Zion, Tampa's first African American cemetery.
In January 2020, Tampa Bay 28 first reported over 100 possible graves were found on land owned by Tampa businessman Richard Gonzmart on Florida Avenue.
Mayor Jane Castor, Tampa City Council members, members of the Zion Cemetery Maintenance and Preservation Society, and Tampa businessman Richard Gonzmart are expected to discuss the land swap at 12:30 p.m.
A historical marker was placed at the site in Feb. 2025.
