POLK COUNTY, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a two-vehicle crash involving a dump truck that killed one of the drivers.

PCSO said deputies were dispatched to County Road 557 and Polk County Road around 5:45 a.m.

Deputies reported a BMW was traveling westbound on Polk City Road while the dump truck was heading eastbound when the BMW attempted to pass several westbound vehicles by moving into the eastbound lane.

As the BMW entered a curve, the drivers of both vehicles saw each other and both swerved to the south shoulder of the roadway, resulting in a head-on collision, according to PCSO.

The report said both vehicles were pushed into the shoulder, and a fire started, engulfing the BMW and burning the engine compartment of the truck.

PCSO said the driver of the BMW was trapped inside their vehicle and was dead when first responders arrived, while the driver of the dump truck was transported to the hospital with minor non-life-threatening injuries.

The deceased driver remains unidentified at this time due to the extensive fire damage, per PCSO.
