WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A Winter Haven woman was arrested after police said she was caught on a Ring camera trying to open car doors in her own neighborhood, according to the Winter Haven Police Department (WHPD).
Officers responded around 11:22 a.m. Sunday to a home on Giorgio Drive after the resident reported a suspicious person in the yard, according to a news release.
The victim told police she received a Ring notification about 30 minutes earlier and reviewed footage showing 32-year-old Natalie Adou Adjo walking into the driveway where two vehicles were parked.
WHPD said Adjo pulled on the handle of one vehicle and then tried a second vehicle before walking away after finding both locked.
Officers canvassing the area later found Adjo nearby wearing the same clothing seen in the surveillance video. Police said she admitted she was the person in the footage.
When questioned, Adjo allegedly told officers she was not trying to enter vehicles but was instead “looking for cigarettes.” Police noted that Adjo lives on the same street as the victim, per the release.
Adjo was booked into the Polk County Jail and charged with two counts of attempted burglary of an unoccupied vehicle.
“This is another case where ensuring that car doors were locked kept this victim from possibly losing their property,” Winter Haven Police Chief Vance Monroe said in a statement. “I applaud the victim for taking this step to prevent crime, and encourage all of our citizens to do the same.”
