SARASOTA, Fla. — Law enforcement is currently investigating a fatal hit-and-run that left a 70-year-old man dead early Friday morning (May 17).

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said an unknown vehicle struck a cyclist on Beneva Road around 12:22 a.m. The cyclist died from his injuries.

Florida Highway Patrol Troopers located and impounded the suspected hit-and-run vehicle, a 2010 Ford Fusion, on Monday (May 20).

Officials said both northbound and southbound Beneva Road were closed at Wilkinson Road to Naomi Ridge Lane while FHP investigated.

“You know, it might just be time we take a look if HOAs are really even necessary.
Maybe we should just do away with homeowner associations as a whole.”

South Florida lawmaker Rep. Juan Carlos Porras (R-Miami) says it may be time to do away with homeowners associations altogether, as more Floridians speak out about rising fees, costly lawsuits, and even arrests tied to HOA disputes. He said this week that he is considering filing legislation in the next session that would abolish HOAs statewide.
