AUBURNDALE, Fla. — A man was arrested Friday after police said he fired a handgun toward a woman carrying a child during a domestic dispute, according to the Auburndale Police Department (APD).
Officers responded around 11:45 a.m. on Thursday to the area of Timothy Street and Ernest Drive for reports of a shooting connected to a domestic incident, according to a news release.
Investigators said 20-year-old Danford Thornton-Swain physically struck his girlfriend during the altercation, took her phone and damaged it to prevent her from contacting law enforcement.
APD said the woman ran from Thornton while holding her young child. As she fled, Thornton allegedly fired two rounds in her direction. Neither the woman nor the child was hit.
After the shooting, investigators said Thornton fled toward Motel 92 on Highway 92 West. Officers later located and arrested him, per the release.
Thornton faces charges including two counts of attempted murder, domestic battery, improper exhibition of a firearm, discharging a firearm in public, witness tampering, criminal mischief and robbery without a firearm, APD said.
