AUBURNDALE, FLA. — A man was arrested for attempted murder in Auburndale on Thursday after he shot at his girlfriend while she ran from him holding her child, officials said.
The Auburndale Police Department (APD) arrested 20-year-old Danford Thornton-Swain.
Officers responded to a shooting call in the area of Timothy Street and Ernest Drive at about 11:45 a.m.
Thornton-Swain was involved in a domestic disturbance with his girlfriend. During the incident, Thornton struck the victim, took her phone and damaged it, preventing her from contacting law enforcement, APD officials said.
As she was running away from Thornton-Swain while holding her young child, he fired two rounds at her from a handgun, officials said.
Neither the girlfriend nor her child was struck by gunfire.
Thornton then fled the area toward West U.S. Highway 92. Officers apprehended him a short time later.
Thornton was charged with two counts of attempted murder, battery, improper exhibition of a firearm, discharging a firearm in public, witness tampering, criminal mischief and robbery without a firearm.
