SARASOTA, Fla. — Police have released more information about a crash between an officer and an 8-year-old boy riding a dirt bike in Sarasota Monday night.

The Sarasota Police Department said the incident, which involved one of their officers, occurred around 6:30 p.m. near 22nd Street and Maple Avenue.

According to police, the officer was leaving the scene of a different call for service when the crash happened. The area was closed for several hours while they gathered evidence.

The boy was seriously injured and is currently being treated at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Police said he is still hospitalized as of Tuesday morning.

The officer was uninjured and is currently on restricted administrative duty.

"We understand the community’s desire for answers, and we are committed to providing transparent updates as we verify critical information," officials said in a statement. "The Sarasota Police Department will continue to share verified information as it becomes available. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work diligently to ensure a thorough investigation."

Anyone with information about the crash should contact Crime Stoppers of Sarasota at 941-366-TIPS.

“You know, it might just be time we take a look if HOAs are really even necessary.
Maybe we should just do away with homeowner associations as a whole.”

South Florida lawmaker Rep. Juan Carlos Porras (R-Miami) says it may be time to do away with homeowners associations altogether, as more Floridians speak out about rising fees, costly lawsuits, and even arrests tied to HOA disputes. He said this week that he is considering filing legislation in the next session that would abolish HOAs statewide.
